May Family Reunions

In recent years a number of our family members have renewed a tradition of holding family reunions in Eastern Kentucky. Reports are being posted on these gatherings and information on future meetings will be added.

1890

Earliest known May Reunion was held in Wisconsin.
Col. A.J. May visited his sisters and first cousin, Col. Reuben May in Vernon County .

September 11-12-13, 1998 in Prestonsburg, KY.

Roberta Cannoy (Daws) provided most of the information used to document the following early reunions from the records of her mother, Elizabeth Greenwade (Cannoy) [1897-1987], and her aunt, Anna May Greenwade (Taylor) [1886-1942].

Early May Family Reunions

 1929

August 25, 1929 - Held at the country home of Dr. and Mrs. W. B. Robinson on the Stepstone Road at Mt. Sterling, Kentucky. Attended by 85 descendants of Samuel May (1820-1904).

 1930

In August, 1930 a reunion was held at the home of David May in Nicholasville, Ky. - but no minutes are known to exist. Mention is made of this "second reunion" in the final paragraph of a 1931 article in the Floyd County Times. In 2002 a niece of David, Roberta Cannoy (Daws), provided us with a photo of the gathering.



April 29, 1930 - Held as a birthday party for Mrs. B. L. C. May at Alphoretta, Kentucky - with a large list of attendees, primarily from Eastern Kentucky.

 1931

August 23, 1931 - Held at the country home of Mr. & Mrs. W. M. Greenwade at Cliff, Kentucky - with 190 attendees registering. A fine photograph of this meeting has been preserved and is available for you to view.


Summer, 1931 - Held at the home of Reuben Thomas May at his farm on Blain Creek in Lawrence Co, KY, probably on Labor Day weekend. A group photo as been preserved and the people in it have been identified by family members.

 1932

August 29, 1932 - Held at the home of Mrs. Florence Hereford at the mouth of Abbott Creek, north of Prestonsburg - with a list of 310 attendees.

 1933

August 1933 - Held at the home of Mrs. Tom Greenwade at Frenchburg, Kentucky, the County Seat of Menifee County.

 1934

August 23, 1934 - Held as a joint meeting at Dwale, Kentucky in honor of Samuel May (1859-1917) and Thomas R. May (1860-1929).

 1935

August 25, 1935 - Held at the home of Bascom May on May's Branch, north of Prestonsburg - with 260 attendees.

 1936

August 23, 1936 - Held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Elster Polley at Winchester, Kentucky in honor of Dixie May Polley's father, William Reuben May (1860-1951) - with about 200 attendees.

About the summer of 1936 - Held on the farm of Reuben Thomas May, possibly after his death in 1937.

 1937

August 27, 1937 - Held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel May near Sharpsburg, Kentucky - with about 150 attendees.

 1938

Sunday, August 28, 1938 - Held at the home of Dr. & Mrs. W. B. Robinson near Mt. Sterling, Ky. - with 201 attendees.

 1939

May 27, 1939 - This date is mentioned on a scribbled note and mention is made of 201 attendees. It probably refers to the 1940 reunion.

 1940

Fourth Sunday of August, 1940 - Held at the home of Rev. & Mrs. David May on Nicholasville Road between Lexington and Nicholasville, Kentucky - with about 205 attendees.

 1941

Fourth Sunday of August, 1941 - Held at the home of Mr. D. May family near Salyersville, Kentucky.

 1943+

A small renion was held in Leesburg at the home of Mattie Leeds Allen (McDaniel), a granddaughter of David L. May. Probably after David's death, since he wasn't in attendance.

 ~ 1948

Another small reunion was held about 1948 at the home of May Allen (Etter), a granddaughter of Rev. David L. May, on Glass Pike in Scott Co., KY.
