their 1931 reunion.
We used to go to Louisa to the May
reunion. The first year, Ike Hurt drove his car and took us. He was
Popa's boss on the railroad section. Grandma and Grandpa were keeping
the people who lived in the [Lawrence County]
'poor house.' This building is somewhere between Route 23 and Little
Blain, Louisa, KY, just south of the town of Louisa where we drove
down west of Route 23 and crossed the mountain to Uncle Tom May's. We
crossed the swinging bridge to Grandfathers home in the country on
Little Blain where the cemetery and the dam are now (1990). They
lived in a house where they had their personal things. The 'poor'
were in the large house where they slept and were fed. Our first year
at the reunion was there. I have an enlarged picture of Granddad and
Grandma taken that year. I was about 16 years old. We had a group
picture. Ike was in the picture.

following probably refers to this reunion, since Dulcie died in 1935.]
I remember that Moma [Dulcie
Adkins May] would go upstairs and have us talk to her
and make noise when the men were killing a lamb for cooking. They
didn't have refrigerators then, so they killed the lamb the day
before the big dinner. They hung the lamb in the large tree left of
the well back of the house. They put some food in the well with
buckets and rope [to keep it cool].
R.T. and Joanah [Edna's
grandparents] invited the neighbors to the Sunday and
Monday Labor day dinner.
