A Singer Sewing machine manufactured in 1889 has been donated to the Samuel May House by Mattie Burnett Hollifield Sutphin, a great-great-granddaughter of Samuel May. It was first owned by Samuel's daughter, Amanda Fitzellen May Burnett*, who was born in the Samuel May House on October 22, 1824. Her husband was a tailor in Prestonsburg until his death in 1858 and she continued as a seamstress in town for a number of years. Amanda gave the machine to her daughter, Martha Burnett Hollifield, who later gave it to Mattie's father, Beverly C. Hollifield.
