Amanda's first husband, John M. Burnett was a tailor in Prestonsburg. He died in 1858, leaving Amanda with four young child, ranging in age from one to eleven. She provided for them as a seamstress in town. In 1881, following the death of her sister Sarah Minerva in 1879 in Viroqua, WI, she married her brother-in-law, James H. Layne, and lived with him in Wisconsin. He died ten years later and Amanda returned to Prestonsburg, where she died in 1901.
1. Sam Burnett b: Abt. 1847 d: 1864 Cynthiana, KY. Sam Burnett was killed at the Battle of Cynthiana in the Civil War. Two of his cousins who also died in this battle were grandsons of Thomas May Sr. -- David May [1828-1864] and Solomon May [1844-1864].
2 Martha Burnett b: 25 Oct 1849
d: 14 Jan 1917 Prestonsburg, KY; buried there in the Weddington Cemetery
3. John Burnett b: Bet. 1854 - 1856
He
was killed while serving as a Judge at Jackson, KY.
4. Lucretia Burnett b: 1857 d:
1898 Johns Creek, Thomas, Ky., buried there in the family cemetery.
