In the 1850 census of Floyd Co., KY Sarah and her sister, Amanda Fitzellen May, were both married and their families lived in adjoining households near the home of their father, Samuel May. About this time Samuel left for the gold fields of California. By 1852 Sarah and James were in Illinois and in 1854 they settled in Franklin in Vernon Co., WI (1860 census), They later moved to Viroqua, WI by the time of the 1870 census. Two years after the death of Sarah Minerva in 1879, Amanda, a widower since 1858, married James and lived with him in Wisconsin until his death in 1891.
Two years after Sarah's death Amanda, widow of John Burnett, married James H. Layne. The marriage is noted in an 1884 book, "History of Vernon County, Wisconsin," pg. 704.

In 1857, at the age of eighteen, Newton Layne was licensed as a preacher in the Methodist Church. He began the study of law in 1859 and in 1860 was admitted to the Bar to practice in the Circuit Court of Bad Ax County, Wisconsin. A year later he was selected as the Republican nominee for District Attorney. However, the war came and in December 1861 he was commissioned captain of the "Bad Ax Tigers," a company recruited by himself and Lieutenants Goode and Charles W. Pitcher. The Company was mustered into service as Co. C, 18th Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteers. In March 1862 they were attached to the Sixth Division under Brig. Gen. B. M. Prentiss in Tennessee during the Battle of Pittsburg Landing, also known as Shiloh. In August 1863 he became prostrated with chronic diarrhea and returned home to Vernon County. Newton's ailment continued to linger throughout the winter with much suffering. He died at his home on February 28, 1864
Take Highway 14, going toward Madison. Pass the radio station. On the left side there are several trailers and houses. Go down a long incline. At the bottom of the hill there is a gravel road on the left. The cemetery is on the right side as you walk up a ways. Newton's grave is in the upper corner diagonally from where you started. You can't miss it because it has stone slabs that form a rectagonal box above ground. It really stands out.

Jamess Jr. served in the Union Army as a Private in Company A, 25th Regiment Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, U.S.A. He enlisted August 14, 1862 and on September 19, 1862 the Regiment was sent to Minnesota to aid in restraining Indian outbreaks. The regiment returned to Wisconsin and in February 1863 it was sent to Kentucky. On March 6th James was discharged with an unspecified disability.
