An open email for the 2005 Membership Drive
April 7, 2005

I am sending this email to descendants of John and Sarah Phillips May who are interested in the genealogy of this family and have been in contact with me over the past few years. Most of you have visited www.mayhouse.org, which is posted for the Friends of the Samuel May House, Inc. You are welcome to browse the website at your leisure and print any pages you find of interest.

I am attempting to document all branches of the family that descend from the May immigrants that left their home village in the Rheinland Palatinate of Germany and arrived in Philadelphia on board the crowded Edinburgh in 1748. John May’s father, Frantz Peter Meÿ/May, was the youngest of three brothers on this journey.

Samuel May was the second — and arguably the most adventurous — of John May’s eight children. The large home he built in Prestonsburg in 1817 was the first brick residence in Eastern Kentucky. A booklet written by Dr. Robert Perry relates the colorful history of the occupants of the house.

In 1996 Bill May and E. B. May, Jr. donated the Samuel May House to the City of Prestonsburg. In 1997 it was restored using a $400,000 grant from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and the Kentucky Heritage Council. The Board of Trustees of Friends of the Samuel May House, Inc. meets regularly and the minutes of their proceedings are posted monthly.

Like most of you, I don’t live near Eastern Kentucky and yet I want to help in some way to support and encourage those who donate their personal time and talents as active members of this fine organization. I am pleased to be a member and to also participate by developing and maintaining the website. The Board appreciates the loyalty of those of you who regularly renew their membership and looks forward to hearing from those of you who would like to add their names to the membership roll.

Best regards,

Fred T. May
