| This photo shows the north upstairs bedroom
of the house. We think that Samuel`s and Catherine`s sons used
this room as their sleeping room. It was also used as a guest
room and as a ballroom. A pile of straw ticks was kept in the
corner. Since the May House was located along Eastern Kentucky`s
first highway, the Pound Gap Road, and Samuel was an ambitious
man, he probably provided food and shelter for many travelers
who came down the road. Overnight guests probably slept in this bedroom with the older boys. Everyone slept on the floor on straw ticks. The obligatory morning ritual was performed with a basin of water, a wash cloth, and a chamber pot. |
