| During the Civil War, Confederate leaders used the May Farm as a campground and recruitment center. Records show that on the night before the Battle of Middle Creek, a skirmish was fought at Samuel May`s steam-mill at the mouth of Abbott Creek. The Confederates wanted to retain possession of the mill so that they could grind grain and make bread for their troops. Jack May and other rebel leaders used the farm in September, 1861, when they were organizing the 5th Kentucky Infantry. During that period, over one thousand men were camped in the meadow below the May House, on land which is now occupied by the Highland Shopping Center. The farm was also used by the Confederates during their Fall 1862 invasion of Kentucky. |
