May House Balcony
The balcony of the restored house is based on a design common during the Federal Period. During the 1830s Senator Samuel May addressed crowds at the May House from a balcony very like this one. Tress May Francis claims that Samuel was an excellent orator, and that his senatorial speeches were `considered fine` by all who heard them. Old-timers in Whitesburg told Tress that Samuel, during his senatorial race against Nathaniel Collins, delivered a speech from a rock cliff above the banks of the Kentucky River.
