| This photograph shows the May House as it looked in August, 1997. Restoration of the house started in August, 1996 and was completed in April, 1997. Like most Floyd County houses of the early period, it faces the Big Sandy River. During the 1830s, when he was serving in the Kentucky legislature, Samuel May led the fight to build Eastern Kentucky`s first highway, the Mount Sterling--Pound Gap Road. It extended from Mount Sterling to Pound Gap. The old roadbed of the road can still be seen below the tree line at the base of the May House Knoll. At the northwest corner of the property, it turned toward the river and Samuel May`s ferry at the mouth of Abbott Creek. |
