| This photograph shows the Tazewell County Bar. It was taken sometime during the 1890s. Jack May is the white-bearded gentleman in the center of the front row. During his years in Tazewell, Jack tutored many younger men in the law. Jack`s son, Samuel Davidson May, is sixth from the left, second row. Although the hallmark of his character was his courage, Colonel May was also known for his wit. Jean Graham Kilby, daughter of Judge Samuel Graham, told the following story: On one occasion, while waiting impatiently for a hung jury to make up its mind, Graham asked May if it was okay to send twelve dinners to the jury room. May replied: `Yes, and send in a bale of hay for the jackass who`s holding up the decision.` |
