Reuben May (1815-1902)
This is a photo of Reuben May (1815-1902), second son of Thomas May and Dorcas Patton May and nephew of Samuel May, builder of the May House. Born at the family farm on Shelby Creek, he married Emma Honaker of Pike County on March 5th, 1835. During the Civil War Reuben served with the 7th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, U.S.A., and rose through the ranks to become Colonel of the regiment. He saw action at Perryville, Vicksburg, Murfreesboro, Laurel Hill, and other battles. After the war he emigrated to Wisconsin, where he became the owner of a 700-acre farm. He served two terms in the state legislature, and in 1879, at the age of 64, he ran unsuccessfully for Governor of Wisconsin on the Greenback ticket.
