| This is the grave of John May, seventh child of Thomas May and Dorcas Patton May. He was born on June 3rd, 1821 at his father`s farm on Shelby Creek, Pike County, Kentucky. He died in Coeburn, Virginia on July 23, 1908 and is buried there. John May married Martha Jane Osborn, born Dec. 31, 1826, at Castlewood, Virginia. She was a daughter of Solomon and Elizabeth (Smith) Osborn. In the Fall of 1861 John enlisted in the Virginia State Line, but in 1863 he transferred to Co. C of the 7th Battalion, Confederate Cavalry, a unit composed of Pike County men. He was promoted to captain of the unit sometime after July 29, 1864. In 1882 John was elected to the Kentucky Legislature and served one term. He moved to Coeburn in 1890. |
