This photograph shows Catherine Evans May,
wife of Samuel May, during the period when she was living with
her daughter, Mahala May Randall, in Louisa, Kentucky. Born in
Virginia on April 1st, 1787, she died in Louisa after 1867. Catherine
was the daughter of Thomas Evans, a Welsh emigrant who settled
in Morgantown, (West) Virginia. She and her brothers Thomas and
Richard migrated to Prestonsburg sometime around 1806. She married
Samuel May in 1808. In 1806 the younger Thomas Evans built the second Floyd County Courthouse. When that building burned down in 1808, he contracted to build the third courthouse. That structure was completed in 1813. Samuel May was his assistant. |
