Minutes of the Board of Trustees
July 23, 2002
Those present: Sam Hatcher, Don R. Johnson, Delmas Saunders, Dr. Robert Perry, Alice Howard and Patricia A. Johnson.
Friends of the Samuel May House met for their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, July 23rd, 2002. The Minutes of the June 25th meeting had been emailed and snail mailed to members. Mr. Hatcher asked if there were any additions or deletions to be made to the Minutes. There being none, the Minutes will stand as presented.
In the absence of David Hereford, Mr. Hatcher presented the Treasurer's Report. There being no additions or deletions, the Treasurer's Report will stand as presented. (Copy can be found in May House files.)
Dr. Perry expressed his appreciation to Don and Patricia Johnson who had completed the mailing of letters reminding members of their dues being due at this time. All members concurred on their appreciation as well.
Mr. Hatcher stated that this had given us a chance to clean up our membership list that we had had for awhile. He also pointed out the flag pole that the Mayor and City Council had purchased for the May House was now in place. He also stated that the Commander of the Col. Andrew Jackson May Camp was preparing a formal flag dedication to be held on Thursday evening, July 25, 2002, at 7:00 PM. All were welcome to attend.
Dr. Perry stated that he would write a letter of "thank you" to the Mayor and City Council on behalf of the May House Board.
Dr. Perry stated that he had conducted several tours of the May House since we had met last month. He had averaged two a week; and, would have two to conduct on Friday and Saturday of this week. The May House had made $176.00 from two tours previously conducted and would also make around the same from the tours of this week.
Mr. Hatcher stated that we had also received $285.75 royalties from the Scalf book that we had sold. He reminded the group that Henry P. Scalf's children had donated the royalties to the May House from the books we sold. Dr. Perry stated he would write a letter of "thank you" to the children of Henry P. Scalf.
A discussion of the air conditioning system then began. The system was working on the second floor; however, it was barely working on the first floor. The first floor was stuffy and almost unbearable. Following this brief discussion, Delmas Saunders and Alice Howard stated that they would try to be available to let men in to work on the system. Mr. Saunders would make the initial contact and let Alice know when the men might be available to come and look at and work on the system.
Dr. Perry then informed those present that he had committed the members of the Friends of the May House to hold a reception on October 25th, 2002, for those who had ancestors who fought in the Battle of Middle Creek during the War Between the States. He is in the process of contacting many who had ancestors in the War and feels we will have a large group to attend the reception, as well as the formal dedication on Saturday, October 26th which will be held at 2:00 PM at the Battlefield.
