Minutes of the Board of Trustees
Prestonsburg, Kentucky 41653
July 22, 2003
Those present: Patricia A. Johnson, Don R. Johnson, Lillian Baldridge, Garnett Fairchild, Samuel D. Hatcher, Jimmy Reed, Marshall Davidson, Delmas Saunders, Alice H. Perry, and Jim Spencer.
Mr. Hatcher stated that the Minutes of the June meeting had been mailed and emailed to everyone. He asked if anyone had any additions or deletions. There being none, the Minutes will stand as approved as presented.
Mr. Hatcher stated that David Hereford had failed to mail a Treasurer's Report to us. Therefore, we will have them to present at our next monthly meeting. He stated that he knew we had received a check in the amount of $116.00 for the sale from Over Mountain Press for the sale of Dr. Scalf's book. And, we will have a full report at the next meeting.
Mr. Hatcher stated that we still had eight (8) pictorial history books left for sale for $45.00 each. It was his understanding that these are all the books we will be able to ever receive - that publication on them has stopped. He stated that he had kept one in the Archives for the May House.
He once again reminded those who had not been present for a while that that the Tourism Director had been given a key to the House and a set of cards and had agreed to take groups on tour of the House any time she received a request for one. He also stated that neither he nor Jimmy Reed had heard any more from the Pharmacy Company that met at the House each year; therefore, he was assuming they were meeting somewhere else this year.
Mr. Hatcher stated that a donation had been received again this year from Mrs. Lambert who was a direct descendent of Colonel May from Tazewell, Va. He also stated that Alice had brought several pictures that Dr. Perry had collected throughout the years and she wanted to donate these to the May House in his Honor. It was noted that Dr. Perry had labeled each and every one of them. Also, some clothes that Dr. Perry had purchased to wear for dedications and ceremonies at the May House were brought back as a donation for the House to keep and use for different occasions and ceremonies. The Board expressed their appreciation to Alice for donating these items to the May House. Alice stated that she was sure Bob would have wanted them kept there.
Much needed work on the exterior of the House was then discussed. Mr. Hatcher stated that he had a friend who did painting and he would once again try to get in touch with him to paint parts of the House before winter arrives. If he could not do so, Lillian stated that she knew of someone who might do the work for us. Lillian stated that she would donate the paint if we could find someone who would do the work.
A sign for the House was then discussed and Garnett stated that she had not had a chance to mention it to anyone; but, would do so as soon as she could. Jimmy Reed stated that he had promised Dr. Perry that the rock would be used in front of the House and a sign would be erected for the House and that some how he would keep that promise. Jimmy would also work to get a sign and someone to prepare a wall to hold that sign with the rock we had.
Delmas Saunders donated to the House a school chair that had came from the Bonanza school some time around 1930; an oxen yoke; and a wooden high chair that had belonged to the Burke family. The Board greatly appreciated the donations and thanked him for them.
There being no further business, a motion was made by Don R. Johnson to adjourn, seconded by Jim Spencer. Motion carried.
