The "Weaning House"

This house on May`s Branch was constructed of hand-hewn poplar logs in 1871 by Bascom May's father, Samuel May (1820-1904). Samuel called this house the "Weaning House" because each of his sons was allowed to use the house while saving money to buy his own farm. Bascom, the youngest of the sons, and his wife, Annie Rhoda Mayo, lived in the house from 1890 until Bascom`s death in 1958. He was buried in the May cemetery near his home.

Bascom made his living with his dairy operation on May's Branch, and his milk wagon was a familiar sight in Prestonsburg. The house was razed about 2000.
