Extensive genealogy work continues to be compiled by the descendants
of Elizabeth May and Ephriam Elliott Hill. Our best source of photos of Elizabeth's descendants have been collected by members of the Campbell family descended from
her daughter, Rachel R. Hill, and son-in-law, Robert Montgomery Campbell.

1 Elizabeth (Betsey) May b: 20 Oct 1811 Prestonsburg, KY d: 1891 Missouri, buried in Hebron Cemetery in Platte Twp, Buchanan Co, MO Age at death: 80 est.
.. +Ephriam Elliott Hill b: Abt. 1807 Ohio m: 6 May 1830 Floyd Co., KY d: Bet. 1864 - 1870 Missouri Age at death: 57 est.

Family genealogists generally spell his name "Ephriam" or "Ephram," but it most likely derives from the Tribe of Ephraim in the Old Testament.

Ephriam is listed in the 1830 U.S. Census for Floyd Co., KY as head of a household, between 20 and 30 years old, with one female - certainly she must be his bride Elizabeth - between 15 and 20 years old. He is not listed in the 1840 census of Floyd County, but that year an E. Hill is in the census for Richmond, Ray County, MO. In 1849 he is listed as living in Green Township in Platte Co., MO with one poll and $95 of personal property. In 1852 Ephriam was a Trustee of newly incorporated New Market, MO, according to "Annals of Platte Co., MO" by Paxton in 1897.

A deed is recorded [Book C, page 301] in Floyd Co. from Ephriam E. Hill to Samuel May for 74 acres on Abbott Creek. It is dated 30 Mar 1832. We know from County Court records that he was still living in Floyd County in October 1836, when he was appointed as a commissioner for unappropriated lands in the county.

We have no photos of either Ephriam or Elizabeth.

Note on the back of this earlier photo

Galen has been described as a gun-fighting law officer in South Dakota. He was a guard on a gold coach and often rode in the shot-gun position. He was shot during the Canyon Springs Gold Coach Robbery but lived another 10 years. There are many historical articles about the robbery which took place on the old stage coach route between Deadwood, SD and Cheyenne, WY. He is also mentioned in an adventure about his first cousin, Daniel Boone May.

See more about this interesting pair of cousins

Gale and Nettie had two children:
A daughter: May Reed Hill b: 1 May 1884 Deadwood, SD
A son: George Elliott Hill b: 1886 Deadwood, SD

Nettie's parents raised their children, who were about ten years old when Nettie died a few years after Gale. Her father, George Worthington Winn, ran the livery at Deadwood, S.D.

May Hill married Orson Horton Wilcox in 1902 and her family moved to Rapid City about 1918. Later she managed the concession at the site of the famous sculptures at Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota. Her two sons were among 400 men working for Gutzon Borglum, who sculpted the 60-foot busts of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln between 1927 and 1941.
