Catherine`s Parlor
This photo shows the fireplace in the south parlor of the house. Both the mantel and the hearthstone are original. This parlor was probably used by Catherine May as her private bedroom, so we call it Catherine`s Parlor. Frontier wives lucky enough to have homes like the May House usually chose to have their bedrooms downstairs. Catherine probably owned a canopy bed, a wardrobe, a bureau drawers, a sewing table, and a tea table and chairs. This fireplace has been restored to show the original dimensions of the firebox. The May House fireplaces are designed to burn coal rather than wood, because coal is plentiful in the region.
