Samuel May`s Parlor
This photo shows the north parlor of the May House, the main feature of which is a magnificent hand-carved mantel. It was probably purchased in Cincinnati or Louisville and shipped up the river in a flatboat. All the flooring and floor beams of the original house were demolished during the restoration. The new floor beams are supported by cement piers. The new floors are yellow poplar treated with linseed oil. The old floor beams were oak. They are now in the possession of Terry Ratliff, the well-known Floyd County Woodcraftsman. Terry has agreed to make an exhibit for us out of one of the beams.
