This photograph shows one of the huge poplar
beams which were recovered when the ell was demolished in October,
1966. The beam in this photo measured more than twenty feet long
and was about two feet wide and ten inches deep. The original
ell had two such beams sitting lengthwise on top of its north
and south walls. They were evidently placed there to raise the
roof and provide additional room in the attic. Both beams were
notched to anchor roof beams. The beam along the south wall of the ell was in very bad condition. The beam along the north wall, however, was still in good condition, so it was fashioned into a bench and placed on the new back porch of the house. |
