| Taken around 1891, this photo shows the steamboat Cando moored at the Prestonsburg dock. Built for the C and O Railroad, it acquired its name after the man painting the sign on the pilot house forgot to leave spaces between the letters. Visible in the foreground are boxes, casks and bags containing sugar, flour, coffee, lead, gunpowder, horseshoes, and other supplies. Boats like this one ascended the river during the rainy season, when water levels were high. This magnificent photograph was once the property of James Hatcher of Pikeville. It was saved for posterity by Henry Scalf, and today it is part of the Scalf Collection in the Alice Lloyd College Photo Archives. |
