Birds-Eye View of Prestonsburg
This photo shows how Prestonsburg looked during the 1880s. It was taken from an elevated point on the south bank of the river below the town. The camera is pointed north by northwest. The street it is pointed down is today`s Arnold Avenue. The large, two-story frame house on the right side of the street is the Harmison House, built by Prestonsburg merchant P. D. Harmison. It later passed into the hands of Prestonsburg attorney Will H. Layne. Today the Layne House is the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Ross of Prestonsburg. This photo comes to us courtesy of the Alice Lloyd College Photo Archive. The orginal can be found in the files of the Filson Club in Louisville, Kentucky.
