| Here is the May House as it looked in 1936. The photo was found in an album that once belonged to Tress May Francis, the May Family genealogist. It now belongs to William James May of Prestonsburg, who was kind enough to let me copy it. The May House was built by Samuel May in 1817. It was once the hub of his 400-acre farm. Samuel raised corn, oats, wheat, hay, flax, cattle, hogs, and sheep. His main cash crop was hogs. He also owned a ferry, a grist mill, and a saw mill.The tall pine tree on the left probably predated the house. In the 19th Century the farm was called `The Pines.` Historian Willard R. Jillson says that the house was built on the site of a Totero Indian village. |
