First Brick Courthouse
This is an artist`s conception of the third Floyd County Courthouse, built in the 1817-1821 period by Samuel May. Built at a time when the population of Prestonsburg was fifty souls, it served the county until the late 1880s. This building was located on Front Street directly north of Billy Ray Collins`s Playhouse Restaurant. A monument marks the spot where it stood. The drawing was done by Bill Fraley, a student at Prestonsburg High School in the 1950s. Fraley based his drawing on a description of the courthouse he found in old records of the Floyd County Court. This photo was found in the Henry Scalf Collection at the Allara Library, Pikeville College, Pikeville, Kentucky.
