Dorcas O. Marrs, the 10th of 11 children of John Marrs and Cynthia Patton May Marrs, was born in Pike County, KY on March 9, 1854. Her father was among the most prosperous farmers in the county. She is listed in the household of her parents on their farm on Robinson Creek in the 1860 and 1870 census. Her mother died September 3, 1870, when Dorcas was 16 years old. Two years later she married Andrew Jackson Scott, a widower with a 5 year old daughter. By the time of the 1880 census she had two young sons, Robert and Thomas. In 1881 her last child died on the date of his birth. On July 26, 1890 her husband, 13 years her senior, died in Pike County. Some family records say he was in the timber business for about twenty-five years. By the 1890s the hardwood timber business in Eastern Kentucky was the largest source of income in the region. [Henry P. Scalf, Kentucky's Last Frontier, pp 213-220.] In the 1900 census Dorcas O. Scott was listed as a widow who was the head of a household with her two sons in their 20s and her father, age 86. In 1910 she was still on the farm with her sons. Her father died in 1902. The enumerator of these censuses was E. J. Picklesimer, a neighboring farmer and husband of her niece, Polly Anna (Annie) Marrs Picklesimer. Dorcas and her sons moved to Clark County, KY about 1910. In the 1920 census Dorcas, and her two sons, Robert and Thomas were living in Clark County, KY. Information from her brief obituary in the local paper in 1933 tells us: Mrs. Dorcas Scott, 79 years old, wealthy landowner, died Monday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at her home on the Paris Pike, following several weeks illness. She was born and reared in Pike County and had been a resident of Clark County 25 years. She was the widow of Jack Scott of Pike County. She was a member of the First Methodist Church in Clark County.
