Battle of Ivy Bridge

Genealogists of the Byrne family have written that Peyton Buckner Byrne, Company C, 5th Ky, Bates' Division, Hardee's Corps, Army of Tennessee, enlisted Oct. 26, 1861 at Prestonburg KY for 12 months. He was 52 yrs of age - from Greenup County - at the time of enlistment. The initial muster roll shows him in Hiram Hawkins company. In Sept 1862 he was in Thomas J. Henry's Company Ky 5th Infantry. He subsequently re-enlisted and was listed in Ky 5th Mounted Infantry throughout the war.

The following poem was found a few years ago among the family items of Gene Huddleston and a typed copy was given to a cousin, Beverly Schmitz. Gene was unaware he had it, even though it is over 100 yrs old. He gave permission for it to be posted.

This Civil War battle was fought at the mouth of Ivy Creek in Floyd County on November 8, 1861. A memorial is now placed by on US 23 at the scene of the battle .
