Henry P. "Buck" Scalf (1902-1979)
Dedicated teacher, author, editor, reporter and local historian

The Overmountain Press has reprinted this fine book from the 1972 edition. It records the history of the region of the original Floyd County, Kentucky which encompasses land located in the valleys of the Big Sandy, Licking and Kentucky Rivers of Eastern Kentucky. It relates the story of the exploration, settlement, and development of this vast mountain empire, now composed of twelve Eastern Kentucky counties, with emphasis on the impact which the Civil War had on the region, as well as things like land title disputes, the development of the region's coal, gas and timber resources, and the Great Depression.
