I am very pleased to post the following information concerning a branch of the May family that moved west from Floyd County before 1840 to settle in Western Missouri, north of Kansas City. Descendants of this family line attend annual reunions in Enid, OK. Campbell genealogists continue to be active and we exchange research information to add to the family records.

Fred T. May

Campbell Family

This branch of the May family is descended from Elizabeth May, daughter of Samuel May (1783-1851) and Catherine Evans (1787-aft.1860). Elizabeth was born in Prestonsburg, Kentucky on Oct 20 1811 and moved to the Samuel May House when it was completed in 1817. She was married there on May 6, 1830 to Ephriam Elliott Hill and began keeping house in Floyd County. They are listed in the census that year. In 1832 Ephriam sold a 74 acre farm on Abbott Creek to his father-in-law, but the couple apparently remained in the county until after the birth of their fourth child, Rachel R. Hill, on August 16, 1835. They moved from Floyd County and beginning in 1840 Ephriam's name appears on deeds in Ray Co., Missouri. He also is listed in the 1840 census of that county.

In 1852 Ephriam was a Trustee of newly incorporated New Market, MO, where he operated a store ["Annals of Platte Co., MO" by Paxton in 1897]. During the Civil War he wrote some letters from Weston - located a few miles north of New Market - that describe how he was chased out of New Market by the Bushwhackers (Southern sympathizers). Ephriam wrote again in 1864, "I am here in Weston and not doing any thing but spending what few dimes I had left."

The Campbell branch of the family descends from Robert Montgomery Campbell and Rachel R. Hill, who were married June 10, 1852 in New Market, Green Twp., Platte Co., MO by R.G. Barber, J.P.
