Some East Kentucky Roots
Descendants of Caleb & Margaretta Patrick May

By Bruce David May & Nadine Carol Preece May
Gateway Press Inc. Baltimore 1985
Hardbound book - 475 pages - indexed

Caleb May [1781-1827] is not related to John May, another pioneer of "Old" Floyd County and the father of Samuel May. These three men are the only Mays named in the 1810 census of the county.

Caleb [1781-1827] and Margaretta [1783-1861] married in Russell Co., VA about 1801 and lived in that county until at least 1806. They settled on the Licking River, near present-day Salyersville before 1810. Records confirm that he was serving as a minister of the Gospel in the United Baptist Church at Burning Springs in 1810. Both are buried in the May Cemetery at the Old May Homestead.

This book is a very complete compilation of a number of generations of this family, up to 1985. To date, no one has yet proven who Caleb May's parents were.

Their ten children were:
John May 1802-1865
William May 1804-
David May 1806-1855
Blair May 1808-1858
James May 1811-
Margaret May 1813-1870
Samuel May 1815-1885
Martha May 1817-
Sarah [Sally] May 1820-
Caleb May, Jr. 1823-
