PAINTSVILLE - Charles C. Wells "Hardware Charlie" passed away Tues., June 28, 2005 at his home in Paintsville. Charles was born on Aug. 18, 1934 to the late Charles J. and Elizabeth Rice Wells, and Grandson to John B. and Jenny Ward Wells. John B. Wells was president of Citizens National Bank from about 1930 to 1958. Charles is survived by his wife, Carlos Horn Wells of Paintsville, his son and daughter-in-law Charles B. Wells and Sheila Price Wells of Georgetown, Ky. Charles graduated from Millersburg Military Academy and attended Washington and Lee University and Transylvania University. Charles was owner and operator of Hardware Charlie Gas Company, Paintsville from 1955 to his retirement in May, 1996. He served as president of the Kentucky L.P. Gas Association from 1972 - 1973. In 1981, Charles was elected to the Board of Directors of Citizens National Bank and served on that board for 23 years. He was elected as the board's chairman in April, 1966. He was the first chairman of the Board of the Southern College of Osteopathic Medicine from 1994 - 1996. Charles was the first president of the Paintsville Jaycees. Charles enjoyed golfing, fishing, traveling and family research. He authored and published three genealogical reference books; Annals of Floyd County Kentucky 1800 - 1826, Vital Statistics of Johnson County Kentucky 1843 - 1904 and Records from Johnson County - 1850. From the last paragraph of his forward in Annals of Floyd County, KY 1800 - 1826: "This book is not intended to be a history of Floyd County. It is an effort on my part to preserve these early records before they become extinct with age and handling and by doing so will not only fill in a large void for the Eastern Kentucky researcher but will enrich the lives of Eastern Kentuckians now and or generations yet to come."
