Minutes of the Board of Trustees
January 29, 2002
Those present: Don R. Johnson, Patricia A. Johnson, Sam D. Hatcher, Robert Perry, Alice Howard, Jim Spencer, Marshall Davidson, Lillian Baldridge, John Rosenberg and Sabra Jacobs.
The Friends of the Samuel May House met for their regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, January 29, 2002. Mr. Hatcher called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM.
Don R. Johnson made a motion to accept the Minutes of the November 27, 2001, meeting as presented; seconded by Jim Spencer. Motion carried.
In the absence of David Hereford, Mr. Hatcher presented the Treasurer's report (copy attached to these Minutes locally). As of January 16th, the balance of the general fund is $3,856.46 and as of Oct. 26, 01 the balance of the archive fund is $258.27 with $135.00 to be subtracted from this amount for an invoice that Dr. Perry had sent in for developing pictures, making a balance at this time of $123.27 in the archive fund. Don R. Johnson made a motion that the Treasurer's report be accepted as presented; seconded by Jim Spencer. Motion carried.
Ms. Baldridge asked what was the status of the wallpaper. Dr. Perry informed her that Kevin Hereford had ordered it; however, the company had been centered in New York and was involved in the Sept. 11 incident; making it impossible to get the paper at this time.
Mr. John Rosenberg, who had been unable to attend for a while was brought up-to-date in regard to matters of construction, furniture, etc.
Following a brief discussion regarding how to raise monies to continue restoring the House, Mr. Rosenberg and Dr. Perry stated that they felt a formal request to the Tourism Commission and to the City Council needed to be made. Also, the new Tourism Director needed to be contacted by the Friends of the May House in regard to them helping supply funds to keep a lady at the House so it could be open in the summer especially for tours, special occasions, etc.
Ms. Baldridge stated that the Appalachian News Express had a supplement to their magazine, which included local history articles. She asked that someone contact them and ask that an article on the May House be included in one of their editions. Dr. Perry stated that he would be happy to contact the magazine.
Dr. Perry presented to the group, an idea that he and Jim Spencer had talked about and would like to do at the May House. He proposed an Old Photograph Fair be held. He stated this was a way to make new contacts and to obtain material for the second pictorial history of Floyd County that was in the making. He stated he probably already had enough photographs to do one half of a second book.
Following a brief discussion, it was decided to hold the Fair on Saturday, April 6th. The exact time will be discussed later. Mr. Jim Spencer made a motion that we set aside $200.00 to do the fair; seconded by Dr. Perry. Motion carried.
Mr. Hatcher then proposed to the group that they host a hospitality room for the SCV/OCR on Friday, May 17th for the Kentucky Division Sons of Confederate Veterans State Convention that the Andrew Jackson May Camp was hosting on May 17th, 18th and 19th. Following a short explanation of what would be happening during the weekend, Dr. Perry seconded the motion. Motion carried.
Mr. Hatcher mentioned contacting all the present Trustees to see if they still want to serve on the Board. Following a brief discussion, this was tabled until the February meeting.
There being no further business, Don R. Johnson made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Jim Spencer seconded. Motion carried.
