have no photos of Sally, her husband. My best source of information on the family, in addition to that compiled by Tress May Francis before 1956, has been provided by Sally's descendants, Richard Wayne Adkins and his daughter, Mia Adkins Fleegel.

Sarah Ann May and William Adkins Sarah (Sally) May Adkins and her husband, William Adkins, lived in Pike County, KY for over twenty years after their marriage in 1839. They decided to move to Missouri during the 1860s. Their first daughter, Dorcas, married in Pike County in 1859. They are the first family listed in the 1850 Pike County Census, with an unusually large estate valued at $1,500. In the corresponding 1860 Census their real estate and personal estate were valued at an impressive $3500 and $600, respectively. Their six school-age children had attended school that year. The story that has been passed to us of their journey says that the family embarked on a steamboat at the mouth of Abbott Creek, at Prestonsburg in Floyd County, Ky. Two of Sally's brothers, Samuel and William James May, lived across the river from the mouth of the creek at the time of their departure. A younger brother, Harvey George May, who was married to Sally's sister-in-law, Louisa Adkins, is known to have migrated to Harrisonville, Missouri in September of 1865 from Mason, Co., Ky. We don't know if they traveled together or which family first arrived in that distant town. The Adkins family is said to have taken the steamboat downstream to Cattlesburg, where they boarded another steamboat to Cincinnati, Ohio. From there they took a train to St. Louis, Mo., and completed their journey to Harrisonville, Mo. by stagecoach. The family lived in Harrisonville until the death of William, who is buried there. Following her husband's death in Harrisonville in 1874, Sally moved to Hannibal, Mo., where she operated a hotel for several years. According to a descendant, Richard Wayne Adkins, that hotel - The Old Planters Hotel - is presently (2000) a tourist attraction of the town. At the time of her death, August 9, 1914, she was living with her daughter, Louise Walker. She was ninety-one years of age and had been a well-known and highly respected resident of Hannibal for more than forty years.

The Hannibal Morning Journal - 11 August 1914 The Death of Aged Lady Mrs. Sarah Adkins Passed Away Sunday Morning at Ripe Old Age. Mrs. Sarah Adkins,one of the oldest women in Hannibal, died at the house of her granddaughter, Mrs. J.D. Walker, 218 1/2 Broadway at 10:50 o'clock Sunday morning. The deceased was born in Pikeville, Pike county, Kentucky, December 6th, 1822 and was therefore aged 91 years, 8 months, and 3 days. She had been very feeble on account of her advanced age for more than a year, but was confined to her bed only one week. She had lived a consistent Christian life since the age of seventeen years. She had resided in Hannibal more than forty years and was well known and highly respected. She was united in marriage to William Adkins, of Pike county, Ky., December 12th 1839 and to this union were born ten children. Only four of whom survive, Spencer Adkins, of Spencer Switch, Ill., Mrs. Lulu Walker, of Hannibal with whom she made her home, Mrs. Lizzie Lear, of Tulsa, Ok., and Mrs. Alice Roberts of Kanasa City; two sisters, Mrs. Dorcus Owens of Colorado and Mrs. Mary Harmon of Montana. She also leaves sixteen grandchildren, twenty nine great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. The funeral services will be held at the residence at 10 o'clock this morning and will be conducted by Rev. C.N. Broadhurst pastor of the Park Methodist Church and the interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Friends of the family are invited to attend the obsequies without further notice.
