Margaretha Lauers
1643 - 1707

On March 23, 1643, Margaretha Lauers was born in Niedermoschel and was taken by her parents, Johannes and Catharina Lauers, to the Reformed Church in Alsenz to be baptized. The history of the Lauers family in the region dates from the birth of Jacob Lauers and his father, Arnolds, who was the great-great grandfather of Margaretha. The following ahnentafel report summarizes the information we have on the Lauers and related families in the Alsenz River Valley. Families of the period were usually large, as is obvious from these records.

Other spellings of the family name in some records are Löhers, Lowers and Lauer. I have chosen to use the Lauers spelling for all of the generations. Women typically have the suffix "in" on their names. For example Margaretha, daughter of Johannes Lauers, is recorded as Margaretha Lauersin.

Note that it was common during the period for children to be given the same name as their deceased siblings.

We don't know the family name of Margaretha's mother, but her grandmother was a Faber and her great-grandmother was a Lorentz. Such information was commonly written in the marriage records in the church. Her home village of Niedermoschel was founded in the Thirteenth Century at the location of a castle that was built about 1180. During the terrible Thirty Years War (1618-1648) all of the villages in the valley were severely damaged and up to 75 percent of their people died or fled the region.

This modern-day map shows the location of Niedermoschel, the home of Margaretha Lauers prior to her marriage in Alsenz to Johannes Meÿ in 1665, relative to Alsenz. A record from 1675 shows there were only 21 families living in nearby Obermoschel, the largest village on the Moschel River that flowed by her home. The distance along the road to Alsenz, located on the Alsenz River, was is two miles.

Following its damage during two wars in the Seventeenth Century, the church in Niedermoschel was left in disrepair into the Eighteenth Century. The "War of the Grand Alliance" [1688-1697], which was touched off by King Louis XIV of France in his quest for control over the Rheinland Palatinate, was the last to devastate the region. The great castles along the Rhine were destroyed during this period.

The wife and five children of Johann Nickel
Meÿ, the fourth son of Johannes and Margaretha, immigrated from nearby Niederhausen an der Nahe to America in 1748. Johann Nickel died in 1743.
