total of twenty-three men were honored by GWU as members of the
All-[20th] Century Men's Basketball Team, and three of them were the
Tallent brothers of Maytown [Langley] KY. The most famous honoree was
Arnold (Red) Auerbach - class of 1940 - and coach of the Boston
Celtics teams that won nine NBA titles in 10 years.}

Tallent ‘69:}

^{Bob Tallent played
basketball for the University of Kentucky under the legandary coach
Adolf Rupp through his Junuor year of college. He graduated from
Maytown, KY High School in 1964 and was a member of the UK team known
as "Rupp's Runts" because the two tallest members of the
team were only 6'5". He was a sophomore when they played in the
finals of the 1966 NCAA Championship, which they lost in one of the
most famous games in history to Texas Western, a team from El Paso,
Tx with mostly black athletes. The movie "Glory Road" tells
the story from the perspective of the Texas Western Miners. Among his
teammates at UK were Pat Riley and Louie Dampier, All-American
players who had professional basketball careers, and Larry Conley,
who had a career in sports broadcasting.}

[Maytown] Langley, Ky.; resides: Arlington, Va. Played one superb
season (1969) at GW after transferring from Kentucky. Definitely a
"shooting guard," he set single season marks for scoring
average (28.9), field goals (284), field goals attempted (677) and
consecutive free throws (41). After his MVP season and first team
All- Southern Conference selection, he was drafted by teams in the
NBA and ABA. While a knee injury ended his playing career.}

later coached the George Washington University Colonials for seven
seasons (‘74-81), including a 20-victory season in 1976. He was
elected to the GW Athletic Hall of Fame in 1990.}

of his most significant statistics at UK are from his last year in
Lexington [1966-67] when he played in 19 games, had 72 rebounds and
made a total of 240 points.}

his Junior year in 1967 he was dismissed from the UK team following
a dispute with coach Rupp after a loss to Tennessee. He transferred
to George Washington University in Washington, DC and played his
Senior season in 1968-69. UK's loss was GWU's gain.}

Tallent ‘72}

Langley, Ky.; resides: Haverford, Pa. Despite knee problems, which
hampered his hoop career, he still ranks 28th on the school's all-
time scoring list with 1,085 points. Led the Colonials (and the
Southern Conference) in scoring as a junior (21.1 points in ‘70)
and earned first team all-conference honors. Also earned
all-tournament second team honors (with Szczerbiak) in 1970. Playing
with older brother, Bob, as sophomore, he averaged 17.6 points in
‘69. After a medical redshirt season in ‘71 due to an
injured knee, he managed to average 12 points during the first
semester of his senior year.}

Tallent ‘76}
^{Hometown:
Langley, Ky.; resides: Vienna, Va. He led the Colonials in scoring
three times (‘73, ‘75 and ‘76) and is GW's third
all-time leading scorer with 1,725 points. Like brothers Bob and
Mike, he was a "shooting guard," averaging 20.8 points in
three varsity seasons. Hit for 30 or more points nine times during
his career, including a tops of 38 (vs. VMI). Team captain and MVP in
both ‘75 and ‘76, he also earned Academic All- America
honors during those seasons prior to being drafted by the NBA
Bullets. Elected to the GW Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993.}
