marriage Many descendants of Col. May have provided information on this branch of the family. Dicksie Knight May, wife of James Mitchell May, a great grandson of Col. May, shared records from her decades of personal research on the May family. She also credited the research of Lucy Henry Spotts May, Helen May Dalton, Audrey Lee Wagner Woodruff, JoAnn Whitson Cuddy, and Tress May Francis for their research on descendants of John and Sarah Phillips May.

Helen May Dalton retired as a nurse anesthetist in April of 1971 and started doing genealogy research in 1976, and loved it. She was active for many years researching the genealogy of the May family. Most of the information we have on the descendants of her father, Samuel Davidson May, (1856-1913) comes from her research. Her collection of family history records and books can be found at: Tazewell County Public Library, Tazewell, VA; Genealogical Society Library at Paris Jr. College in the Alford Building, Paris TX; Nacogdoches Genealogical Society, Nacogdoches, TX. 2. Jackson May, Jr. b: 18 Aug
1860 West Liberty, KY d: 18 Sep 1920 Bluefield, VA, following surgery
in the local hospital, buried in Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell Tress May recorded that Lucy was a secretary to her father-in-law, Col. A. J. May, and helped preserve some of the history of the May family. Dicksie Knight May credits Lucy as "the family historian," who traced the family tree back to John May and Sarah Jane Phillips. Dicksie adds that A. J. Jr. worked for his father from the time he was a young man until his father's death in 1903. When married Lucy Spotts in 1883, he was handling many of the Colonel's concerns, including his coal properties and the farm where they raised sheep. He and Lucy lived on this farm, where they reared their children. His father left his estate - Dicksie says this included everything - to his second wife, Nelle Bly Davidson May. A. J. Jr. and his family had to leave the farm and move into Tazewell. He and his son, William, were both employed as bookkeepers.
